Foxsemicon Aims to Commercialize High-Power LEDs in March or April
Foxconn (Hon Hai Precision Industry) affiliated LED maker, Foxsemicon Integrated Technology (FITI), aims to commercialize its high-power LEDs that have a 100 lm/w emission efficiency this March or April and the company expects to increase its LED light efficiency to 150 lm/w by 2010, helping the…

Since Japan-based Nichia took the lead in marketing white LEDs of 100 lm/w emission efficiency in 2006, other international LED specialists Cree, Philips Lumileds, Osram Opto Semiconductors, and Osram Opto Semiconductors have followed suit. The high-power LED lighting applications are set to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 75.2% from 2006 to 2010 with the market scale to reach US$380 million in 2008, according to players in the LED market.
The light efficiency of Cree`s LED chips with Nichia`s phosphor can reach 130 lm/w, but the product is hard to commercialize due to its high cost. Therefore, the light efficiency of LEDs is mainly for 70-80 lm/w, with LEDs having 60-75 lm/w being able to replace the current high pressure sodium lamps. The major barrier for LED makers is to resolve problems with LED`s heat dissipation and maintaining light efficiency, according to Taiwan LED makers.
